Hospital records
Does anybody know how to go about gettin to see these??

I am trying to get hold of Steven's records, i want to know what is wrong with him and what has caused it Sad

Have been to the doctors for his health check and he is investigating a syndrome that he might have, he was checked for this in his first year of life but because he dint have al the symptoms they said he didnt have it. But having read up on it not all people with it show all the symptons of this syndrome and the doctor we saw today was very helpfull and is gettin in touch with genetist for us.

God, we have been living with this uncertainty for 30 years and i want some answers Angry

RE: Hospital records
This site might help spinny http://www.patients-association.org.uk/FAQ-Category/8

Your medical records do not belong to you but to the Secretary of State for Health. In reality responsibility for your records is passed down to the various health bodies which produce and store your records.

The Data Protection Act allows you to ask to see any records containing information about you, this includes your medical records. If you want to see your records you will need to contact the GP practice or Hospital Trust responsible for them who will usually have a special form to be filled in. You may need to write to them to request they send you a form.

You do not need to say why you want to see your records; however, you may have to tell them if you plan to take legal action based on their contents. Once you have sent this form to the GP Practice Manager or hospital Medical Records Manager they will either arrange for you to go and see your records or send you a copy. However, it can sometimes take several months for a copy to be sent to you.

If you go to see your records it is often a good idea to ask a doctor, nurse or other medical professional to accompany you as records often contain a lot of medical terms and jargon and, if handwritten, can also be difficult to read. The doctor or nurse can then translate the records for you and interpret any test results, which are often very difficult to understand if you do not know what a good or normal result would be.

If you would like help to access or view your records you can ask the local Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) to help you. They are situated in most hospitals and there will be no charge for their help

You can be refused access to your medical records if a doctor thinks seeing your records will adversely affect your mental health or upset you too much. If you would still like to see you records you will need to demonstrate you have put in place the necessary support systems.

RE: Hospital records
I should think you do want to know! It can be a long complicated process, but stick with it. Can you ask some advice from someone at Stevens day centre?? You can't be the only one in this situation Heart

I live in my own little world, but it's O.K. they know me here! Smile

RE: Hospital records
Spinny I have read my hospital records.

I put it in writing that I wanted to see them, got a reply back telling me to contact their medical records department and make an appointment.

When I got there they asked for ID and gave me my notes. I was not allowed to leave the room or take anything out of them, but they gave me paper and pen and I bookmaked the pages I wanted photocopied, they did that there and then for me.

I hope this helps and good luck in finding the info you want about Steven

RE: Hospital records
Can't believe there's any question that you should be allowed to see these Angry. I have nothing useful to add, my love, except my very best wishes and my hopes that the buggers give you full access. Stupid bloody country this is.

All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts.
